The story of Lux

Up to the end of the 19th century washing clothes at home was a tedious, laborious task – cutting off chunks of laundry soap to create good foamy water. In 1884 William Hesketh Lever created a model town near Liverpool called Port Sunlight and soon began to sell separately wrapped soap "tablets". During this time a Frenchman called Monsieur Charpy was employed at Port Sunlight and he developed a new technique for making a very thin sheet of soap which could then be easily flaked.  Its popularity meant a name had to be found and in 1900, after much discussion, it was decided to call it LUX.

The name had many advantages. It was short and memeorable. In Latin it means lights and therefore realted back to Port Sunlight. But most of all, it had clear associations with luxury, an association that remains true today more than 100 years later.

During the 1940's and 1950's Lux became associated with the stars of Hollywood with memorable stars such as Ava Gardener, Elizabeth Taylor, Sophian Loren, Bridgit Bardot endorsing LUX soap. Today LUX still attracts women who love being women. They enjoy the rituals of beauty care and they appreciate being appreciated.

Lux moisturising lotion was first launched and successfully entered the Hand & Body Category in October 2002. Lux Lotions provide all over body care, making your day just that extra bit special.
