South Africa – well placed to become water smart

#WaterSmartNation

Water smart nation

As the nation continues to go through its worst drought in over 30 years, Sunlight 2in1, in partnership with the Department of Water and Sanitation, Coca Cola Beverages and Operation SA, will go on a journey to educate the country on how it can practically save water and reduce its household expenses by saving water.

“Over the past three years, we have seen the impact of our relentless efforts to promote water saving. Having recognised the tangible difference in the lives of communities we have reached previously and noting the pervasiveness of drought in other parts of the country, we are compelled to do more and to help the country to become a water-smart nation,” says Jane Fenner, Laundry South Africa Director at Unilever.

Committed to fulfilling its mission to save water, Sunlight 2in1, as a brand that is highly water dependant- is working to improve the country’s water usage behaviour and be a part of the #watersmartnation.

“Climate change has had an adverse impact on Sub Saharan Africa’s rainfall. We have seen the drought impact KwaZulu-Natal in 2016, Gauteng and the Western Cape in 2017. This year we are seeing its impact in water levels at dams in the Eastern and Western Cape that have resulted in water restrictions.

The drought has necessitated that we engage with partners like Sunlight 2in1 who are committed to engaging the nation through a national roadshow that will empower and educate us all on how we can improve our household water consumption whether or not we have a limited water supply,” says Sputnik Ratau, Department of Water and Sanitation.

Having helped the nation save over 78 million litres of water through its water saving journey in 2017, Sunlight 2in1 remains committed to taking the initiative to more South Africans.

“Whilst the product is designed to make laundry water efficient, our effort to save water goes beyond everyday responsible behaviour to sustainable impact. The Sunlight 2in1 easy rinse process is one such example to encourage users to play their part in saving water. It is a collective responsibility,” explains Fenner.

Recognising that the drought is not exclusively a government problem, the collective efforts of corporate South Africa, civil society and ordinary South Africans will be brought together to address the challenge.

“Working together towards a water smart nation, we believe will ensure we are careful and conscious of how we use water, a lesson that will go a long way towards saving water cost even when the situation has improved,” concludes Fenner.
