Domestos sterilising 101

South Africa domestos family health

So you’re going to have a new addition to your family! Congratulations! An exciting journey lies ahead of you, and we’re sure you can’t wait to get the little bundle of joy home so that he or she can settle into the surroundings and you can start all the amazing new things you get to do with your child.

Before the baby comes though, you probably want to do some home cleaning to ensure your house is as clean and organised as possible – partly to reduce clutter and the need to be tidying up in the first few days, but mostly to get rid of lurking germs and bacteria that could be harmful to your baby. Here’s some cleaning advice and tips to make sure you’re ready to bring your new addition home!

Use thick bleach in the toilet, especially under the rim. Let it sit for a while before flushing. Now is also a good time to bleach your kitchen counter tops, as it’s the most effective method of germ protection in an area where bacteria are rife. You can also wash your fridge shelves and drawers, as they may have been contaminated with mouldy fruits and vegetables, raw meat juices, expired foods and others. Dip them in a bleach and water solution, let them soak, scrub them and then rinse them off and leave them to dry.

Don’t forget about the kitchen sink, where a huge amount of possibly dangerous germs could be hiding. Remember to rinse everything thoroughly with warm water and to put your cleaning rags through a hot cycle in the dishwasher after you’re done.

When the baby is very nearly here, you may want to sterilise a few bottles too. There’s no need to do this weeks before as they’ll then just collect germs again. You can sterilise bottles easily using boiling water

When it comes to sterilising your home, it is important to ensure that you do so thoroughly. Not only will this ensure germ protection, but it will also ensure a healthier and happier family.
