Top Employer 2013

Unilever South Africa was certified as the number one company to work for by the Top Employer Institute.

For the first time in the history of the Top Employers SA Certification Programme Unilever obtained the highest score securing exclusive certification as:

  • Top Employer South Africa
  • No 1 employer in the FMCG sector and
  • No 1 employer in the Manufacturing sector

The Top Employers Institute certifies excellence in the conditions that employers create for their people. Only companies that meet the stringent research criteria receive the Top Employers South Africa recognition.

Commenting on this award, Samantha Crous, Regional Director Africa & Benelux for the Top Employers Institute said, “Optimal employee conditions ensure that people develop themselves personally and professionally. Our comprehensive research concluded that Unilever South Africa provides an outstanding employment environment and nurtures and develops talent throughout all levels of the organisation. They offer a wide range of creative initiatives, from secondary benefits and working conditions, to performance-management programmes that are well-thought-out and truly aligned with the culture of their company.

In 2010 Unilever launched the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan which set high ambitions of doubling the size of its business whilst halving the environmental impact by 2020. Building the organisation and a diverse talent pipeline that is ready to match these growth ambitions is key. This will be further supported by driving a performance and winning culture in which every employee is encouraged to grow to his or her full potential.

Commenting on how it feels to work for the number one employer of choice, Antoinette Irvine, the Vice President of Human Resources at Unilever SA said the company was inspired to attract and develop talented individuals who would take the company to greater heights.

“We are extremely proud to be part of this exclusive group of great employers. Our business is centred on people and they are the reason for our success. We place great energy in ensuring that we create a positive employment experience from the point of attraction to selection to the development and retention of talent. We want to become a great company, with great people and a great place to work. Winning this award creates a sense of pride amongst all our employees,” said Irvine.

“In three years we have ranked number 4 and number 7 and achieving number 1 in this year’s certification out of 83 participants is phenomenal. This award will ensure that our policies and practices are of the highest standards both locally and internationally” she added.

The company puts a lot of emphasis on its people and develops interventions that contribute to the success of the organisation. These include:

  • Creating optimal employee conditions to ensure that employees develop themselves personally and professionally
  • Ensuring that employees achieve successful work-life balance due to a flexible working environment;
  • Employees enjoy international careers;
  • Mentorship programmes
  • A Highly regarded graduate recruitment programme
  • Driving the gender and racial balance agenda across the business and
  • Offering a world class leadership development curriculum

As a multinational, Unilever takes great pride in ensuring that its HR policies and practices are world-class and are consistently implemented across the globe. This is the essence of creating a culture which is unique to Unilever and as the global environment changes; Unilever will always strive to remain relevant.

In addition to the South African Top Employer’s award Unilever has also been certified as a Top Employer in Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya.
