In 1859, Robert Chesebrough, a chemist from New York, visited the oil fields of Titusville, Pennsylvania in the US to research to what new materials might be obtained from the fuel. Over the next decade he perfected the formulation of Vaseline petroleum jelly before opening for business in 1870. Vaseline quickly became known for its ability to protect and restore dry and damaged skin, and over the next century it established itself as a skin product found in households around the world.
For more than 140 years, the restorative power of Vaseline has been generously passed down from generation to generation. This iconic and caring heritage has created an ideal platform for Vaseline to continue inspiring and helping people, offering expert advice and leading skincare solutions. The success of Vaseline’s past is just a small testament to the great future that lies ahead. With a range of exciting new Vaseline product innovations to restore your skin’s moisture and get you excited about skincare … it’s time for rediscovery. It is time to embrace the healing power of Vaseline.
Over the years we are introduced to many brands, only to watch as they vanish from the shelves. The ones that endure, however, are the ones who manage to stay true to their roots and find ways to re-invent themselves: Vaseline is that brand.
The Vaseline journey began in 1859, when a 22 year old chemist from Brooklyn, New York, Robert Chesebrough, discovered a 100% natural product, rich in minerals from deep within the earth, which had remarkable healing properties when applied to the skin.
By 1870, Chesebrough was marketing his petroleum jelly product by the name of Vaseline, and within ten years, the product’s increased exposure and popularity meant that almost every household in America had a jar of Vaseline.
It’s a remarkable marketing fact that Chesebrough’s success was based on one single product, almost to the exclusion of all others. Yet such was the efficacy of his discovery that even today, long after his death, Vaseline is still one of the best known and best loved brands in the world. With products available in over 111 countries, its rich heritage, healing qualities and efficacy have been passed on from generation to generation for over 142 years.
