Domestos changes the lives of over 1,000 scholars in Soweto

World Toilet Day, celebrated annually on 19 November is an initiative to create awareness and improve toilet and sanitation conditions worldwide. A clean and safe toilet ensures health, dignity and well-being. By improving sanitation facilities and promoting hygiene in schools, the benefits to both learning and health of children has become a major priority for Unilever SA and its household brand Domestos.

“Due to sanitation being the foundation of public health, Unilever SA’s household care brand Domestos has embarked on a school refurbishment project in South Africa to improve the toilet and sanitation crisis faced by many schools in South Africa,” said Cynthia Luthuli, Brand Manager at Unilever

It remains apparent that poor sanitation facilities in disadvantaged communities and especially in schools across South Africa is a major contributing factor to the school drop-out rates, and loss school days.

As the main sponsors of “The World Toilet Day”, Domestos handed over a block of refurbished toilets to St Peter Claver Primary School in Pimville, Soweto – the latest beneficiary to Demestos’ ‘Cleaner Toilets, Brighter Futures’ campaign. The independently run primary school received an upgrade to their facilities, and the 1,056 registered learners will experience for the first time how proper sanitation can positivity impact their schooling career. This school will now offer private and separate toilets for boys and girls, and will be in a better position to attract and retain students.

“Since the inception of the ‘Cleaner Toilets Brighter Future’ Campaign by Domestos in 2010, we have assisted 25 schools with new toilets, aiding over 26,000 learners with proper sanitation. This year Domestos launched a hygiene awareness programme ‘Germ Buster Club’ in primary schools across the country. The programme aims to get learners to become brand ambassadors to their parents and spread the awareness on the importance of keeping toilets clean and hygienic at all times. The programme in its inaugural year reached over 113,000 learners in over 150 schools,” added Cynthia.

As a build-up to World Toilet day, Domestos encouraged members of the Maboneng precinct to donate their pee for a cause over four days. 2,145 Supporters of the campaign donated almost 2,000 litres for the cause. In return, Domestos will donate a year’s worth of Domestos product to the St Peter Claver Primary School, which will ensure that the new facilities will remain germ free.

As an international leader in home hygiene, Domestos is continually committed to public awareness of good health practices and this is another way to delivering an important message and uplifting schools and surrounding communities.
