Thokomala Charity Golf Day in KwaZulu-Natal

The story of a home with a heart

On Thursday, 27 November 2014 the beautiful Durban Country Club overlooking the Indian Ocean will play host to a charity golf day in aid of the Thokomala Orphan Care Organisation.

Thokomala aims to re-create family life and normality for orphaned and HIV infected or affected children by giving them the best possible chance for a better future.

The organisation is supported by Unilever South Africa, and currently houses 114 children and reaches a further 2000 through community outreach programmes, while also making access to a social worker more available where there was none before.

Education and Mentorship are important parts of Thokomala’s model. One of Thokomala’s big differentiators from other child care organisations is the funding of tertiary or professional skills training. Thokomala’s mentorship programme engages adults to enter a long term commitment to guide teenage children from the age of 12 years. Mentors help the kids to make the right choices with regards to strengthening talents, further education, professional training and earning a living.

Antje Hockly, Manager for Thokomala said that through this initiative, the organisation has seen countless children’s lives change for the better. 2014 saw a number of Thokomala beneficiaries excel beyond expectation.

To name just a few success stories - “Nombuso, a rebellious 14 year old teenager together with her two younger brothers was taken in at our Umlazi home in 2003. She is now a role model for all Thokomala kids having graduated as a Social Worker in April 2014 and promptly employed by Durban Children’s Society. Her superiors say she is a ray of sunshine and has brought new vigour and drive into their office.

“Siyabonga grew up in our Villa Liza Home in Gauteng. He studied Graphic Design at Cape Town College and is currently doing his internship in Johannesburg, mentoring his siblings in the Villa Liza home at the same time. “Luyanda, Nombuso’s younger brother, is doing his third year in

Marketing and Business Administration. Sindisiwe is in her final year for a Tourism diploma and Agnes – from Newlands – is in her first year Accounting,” said Hockly.

That is why Thokomala, in partnership with Unilever South Africa, is organising the golf day where all the proceeds will be donated towards the maintenance, education, training and upkeep of the homes.

Well-known golfers and stars from various parts of the province and country will descend on the day in support of this charity event. The golf day will take on a four ball alliance format with the first tee off at 11h00 and can be booked at a R5000 for a four ball.

The competition format is four ball alliance, 2 scores to count with prizes for the top 3 spots as well as “nearest to pin” and “longest drive”

The Charity Golf day event is a fantastic opportunity to raise funds for such an important cause. There are different sponsorship package options available. For more details contact or by 14 November 2014.
